We are delighted to announce the extension of our current Hidden Ireland exhibition by Ekaterina Ivanova until Sunday 8 September. This exhibition of photography and prose explores the many castles of county Galway.

From Monday 16 – Saturday 28 September our new artist in residence Susan Mannion will be on site with her new exhibition, and holding a special drop-in meet the artist session Sunday 22 September.

Equinox – Light and Dark Held in Balance

Susan Mannion has been a wood engraver for thirteen years, and this exhibition represents her ninth solo exhibition. The title of the exhibition is taken from the time of year that the exhibition bridges; that is, the Autumnal Equinox on Sunday 22 September, when dark and light are equally balanced.

Three Pearls by Susan Mannion

On that day Susan Mannion is hosting a wood-engraving demonstration and exhibition as part of her residency at Thoor Ballylee. The public is thus invited to meet the artist on Sunday 22 September, between 11am and 4pm. It’s free and people can drop in during those hours to see a demonstration of wood engraving.

According to the artist, “The creation of a handmade wood engraving print is an act of balancing dark and light, with each engraved line on the wooden block becoming a white line after the block has been inked and printed. The balance of white and black is made by adding more engraved lines, taking away more of the surface of the wood block, to create an image.”

This exhibition is also a balance between older work and Susan’s most recent work. There will be a small selection of work from past years, in a retrospective of thirteen years of wood engraving. There will also be a look towards future work, as it is being created as part of the Thoor Ballylee Artist in Residency.

Thoor Ballylee Artist in Residence is supported by Galway Culture Company.
