Yeats Thoor Ballylee Society hosts an evening of spoken word poetry from Poetry Kiln. Dublin spoken word poets from the collective, including Mikey Cullen, will feature along with local Galway-based poets from the Ploughed Field collective and the Oil Slick.
Mikey Cullen, from Beaumont, is a teacher in Gaelcholáiste Reachrann in Donaghmede. The historian and poet also has a background as a tour guide at Kilmainham Gaol. “I’ve written about the nice things in Dublin, in terms of community, history and culture”, he told the Irish Independent. “But then I’ve also written about social issues, the housing crisis, and homelessness.”
Cullen has written for the Irish Women’s football team, and his poem, ‘Home’, went viral on TikTok last year. As well as performing on many stages in Ireland and America, and with an EP as performer and lyricisit in the works, he has published in many anthologies such as Dlúthpháirtíocht, Peace, Land and Bread, Outlaw Poetry and Void magazine.
Poetry Kiln collective is a vibrant group of poets and performers that use wit and wisdom and music to communicate directly with audiences. Poets from the collective like Annie Peter, David Hynes, and Caoimhe Weakliam perform at this historic venue alongside west of Ireland and Galway-based poets from the Ploughed Field Collective and the Oil Slick, an open-mike group performing in the city.
