The Dún Emer Eastside Collective banners launch at Thoor Ballylee

An exhibition of colourful banners created by The Dún Emer Eastside Collective with the artist Áine Phillips is to launch at Thoor Ballylee on Thursday 30 May at 5pm. This free event will celebrate the legacy of the Yeats’ sisters and continued relevance through this remarkable project.

Thoor Ballylee welcomes a display of banners inspired by the textile works of Elizabeth and Lily Yeats

Commissioned by Galway City Council, Galway Public Libraries, and Galway City Museum, Reflections was a programme commemorating the Irish women of 1923 in the context of contemporary Irish feminism, as part of the Decade of Centenaries 2012 – 2023 initiative, supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports, and Media.

This multifaceted community-based project developed over four months to create a series of legacy banners by a newly formed artists group the Dún Emer Eastside Collective under the artistic direction of Áine Phillips. The wider project offered a platform for in-depth discussions, artist residencies, and creative exploration of the lives and contributions of Irish women in visual art, song and writing. The project culminated in a large-scale public performance event in Saint Nicholas Church, Galway December 7th 2023.

The design and format of the Reflections Banners were influenced by the textile works by Lily and Elizabeth Yeats in their association with the Dún Emer Guild and Cuala press. The imagery and motifs are inspired by their innovative Celtic / Irish Revivalist work and by visual art of women creators 100 years ago such as Grace Plunkett, Evie Hone and Mainie Jellett.

The banners will be on display at Thoor Ballylee from 30 May – 16 June 2024.
